This is probably one of the easiest projects that I'll do. The original idea came from this
pin. I love the idea of the lace look, but don't want to use them as coasters. We already have a zillion! These will be hung, added, or placed somewhere in the Craft Office. This particular room is a work in progress so I'll have to let you know where the tiles end up!
There are other tutorials that just use white tiles and spray paint, but I prefer a little more color. If you're interested in what they have to say check
here and
here.
Step 1:
- Paint your tiles, if you want to.
I bought 6: 4 white, 1 mint green, and 1 pale pink. I had to paint three to experiment, of course! While sipping wine and watching Private Practice, I decided to texturize one, give one a two-tone streak and have the third be one solid color. At first, I used a regular crafting paint brush. However, the sponge brush worked MUCH better.
Step 2:
Doesn't that look like eyes?!
- Lay your desired piece of lace over your tile and spray paint it. Pretty simple! Then, carefully, remove the lace.
Make sure you do this outside or in a well ventilated area, obviously! If you are worried that your lace will move when you start painting it, you can use a little bit of spray adhesive. I didn't do this because I was worried that the adhesive would pull off the acrylic paint.
Also, you can cut the lace so that it doesn't cover the entire coaster. I liked the way it looked with the majority covered so I only cut the lace once (to make sure I wasn't missing out on something!).
Step 3:
- After they are completely dry, spray with a finishing varnish.
I used a Japanese brand, but the
FolkArt brand (carried at Michaels) has numerous types of finishes and sealers. Also, if you did want to you them as coasters, I suggest cutting felt to size and using spray adhesive to attach it to the back.
Lastly, enjoy your latest and, possibly, easiest project!
